5 Aspects of a Powerful Voice

Whether you're aiming to become a renown public speaker, a top-class salesman, or just simply want to upgrade your small talk skills, these 5 fundamental aspects will help you attain just that. Inspired by keynote speaker Conor Neill.

Aspect 1 | Breathing

Before starting to speak, take a deep breath. The breath should enable you to count to 20, out loud, and still shout out 18—19—20 when you are finished. Taking a deep breath lifts up your diaphragm and turns your chest into a powerful amplifier.

It's the same principle as a guitar or violin; our voice is truly an instrument!

Aspect 2 | Resonance

Next, when speaking, pay attention to the vibrations created when each syllable is articulated.
The vibrations should come from your sternum and not the nose. Nasal voices are generally perceived as weak voices.

Aspect 3 | Silence

When speaking, apply the power of a pause or silence. This gives the receiver time to process what you say.
Also, implement toning down at the end of certain sentences to create variation in your speech.

Aspect 4 | Articulation

The key here is to literally start and finish each word you speak. This implies pronouncing every syllable and avoiding mumbling.

Aspect 5 | Inflection

Use downward inflection at the end of a sentence to show certainty. This means switching from a higher note to a lower one when finishing a sentence.

On the other hand, upward inflection implies uncertainty or a question. All languages apply an upward inflection at the end of a question sentence.

With these 5 simple tricks, you'll be able to improve your speaking significantly. The key is to practice and turn it into a habit that you do unconsciously.

Now it's up to you, time to speak up!
