Who is Jack Canfield?

Born August 19, 1944 in Fort Worth, Texas, Jack and his family quickly moved out to Wheeling, where he spent his childhood years. At the age of six Jack's parents divorced and he had to move into his grandmother's house together with his mom. Jack has described his childhood as challenging because he had abusive parents as they both were heavy drinkers.

For his middle and high school years, Jack attended the Linsly Military Institute, which was a well known boarding school.

When Jack was young, he frequently participated in football, swimming and running. After high school, Jack attended Harvard University, where he received his B.A. in Chinese history in 1966.

After Harvard, Canfield went on to study to attain his M. Ed. from the University of Massachusetts Amherst.

Jack has been remarried three times.

In his first marriage with Georgia Lee Noble, they had one son together called Christopher Canfield.

At the time of writing, Jack is still married to Inga Mahoney and has become a stepfather to her two sons, Travis and Riley.

Jack Canfield's career

Jack first began teaching at an inner-city school in Chicago after earning his master degree in 1967. Already during Jack's first working year he was named teacher of the year and started to help other teachers to motivate their students.

This inspired Jack to start his very own writing career.

Jack bundled his knowledge of student motivation in to the book called: 100 Ways to Enhance Self Concept in the Classroom.

The book was co-authored with Harold Clive Wells and sold around 400,000 copies.

Years later in 1992 Jack decided it was time for his next book 101 Ways to Develop Student Self-Esteem and Social Responsibility.

Then one year later Canfield wrote the book that would change his life forever, released in 1993: Chicken Soup for the Soul.

Written in the form of storytelling because Jack believed this was the best way to reach a worldwide audience.

The book sold over 8 million copies and after 14 weeks of printing reached number one best-seller and stayed there for a long time.

Over several decades the Chicken Soup for the Soul series expanded to over 250 titles written by various authors. Jack established a corporation around the series resulting in a billion dollar publishing organisation.
