Wayne Dyer - The Father of Motivation

Dr. Wayne Dyer was an American author and motivational speaker who wrote more than 40 books during the span of his life. Also known as 'The Father of Motivation', Wayne left an immense impact on millions of people their lives while spreading a message of realization through faith and purpose.

Growing up

Wayne was born one of three brothers in Detroit, Michigan on May 10th, 1940.

During the first years of his life, his father abandoned the family, leaving his mother with a devastated family in poverty. 

Eventually this turned Wayne to become an orphan and spend several years in the local orphanage.

After some time, Wayne got adopted by a loving but very strict family who taught him discipline and strong moral values.

 

Education

Wayne went to Denby High School and finished his first years in school there.

 

Military Service

After graduating in Denby High School, Wayne went to serve in the US Navy from 1958 to 1962.

 

University

Wayne always kept a hunger for knowledge and learning and so decided to attend a university which funny enough had the same name as him, Wayne State University.

 

Upon graduation it earned Wayne a bachelor in history and masters in counseling.

His constant search for knowledge made him stand out quickly and so earned him a Ed.D doctor degree in counseling (Doctor of Education).

Career 

After achieving the title of Dr. Wayne Dyer, he applied for a job at the same University and became a guidance counselor.

Later on Wayne worked his way up to become professor of counseling psychology at St. John's University in New York City.

 

Private Practice

Wayne also started a private therapy practice and went on to publish his expertise in journals.

This resulted in a lot of attention for his views on human psychology while also holding lectures at St. John's University which focused on positive thinking and motivational speaking techniques. 

 

First Book

The success of Wayne's lectures inspired him to write his very own book on the topics he discussed.

The book: Your Erroneous Zones published in 1976 became a nationwide best-seller.

Capturing Momentum

Wayne captured the momentum perfectly of his first book that began gaining massive success throughout the late 70's.

He decided to quit his teaching job and began a publicity tour around the US.

This quickly filled several bookstores with enthusiastic readers of the book while Wayne made public appearances. 

 

Continuation

The next years Wayne gained a love for literature and the impact it can have along the way and continued to write several more books;

And again the books quickly became best-sellers.

Rise to Stardom

The success of Wayne's books was a hot topic in the media during the 80's, this made Wayne do several guest appearances on television talk-shows earning him the title of 'Father of Motivation'.

This also convinced him to expand his knowledge further in publishing several tapes, programs and recordings of his books in audio format.

 

Spirituality

In the heat of all success, Wayne managed to remain humble and always said God was the reason for his rise to stardom.

Wayne was well-known to discuss the topic of spirituality through faith in all of his books and interviews. 

He recommended people to learn about his very own influences like,

  • Abraham Maslow
  • Lao Tzu
  • Nisargadatta Maharaj

Legacy

During the course of his life Wayne authored + 40 books!

 

Being married 3 times, Wayne raised 8 children. 

Sadly enough Wayne was diagnosed with leukemia in 2009 and died from a heart attack on Mauii, Hawaii in August 30, 2015 at the age of 75 years old.
